BESS Engineering & Technical Advisory
Independent technical advisory for battery energy storage — from use-case definition through procurement, integration and delivery review. TDTEC helps owners and investors test assumptions before they become performance shortfalls or contract disputes.
Project use case and system boundaries
A BESS only makes sense relative to a defined use case: energy arbitrage, firming, network support, hybridisation with generation, or a contracted service profile. Advisory work starts by fixing system boundaries — AC versus DC scope, shared infrastructure with solar or wind, augmentation paths, and what the market or offtake actually requires.
Tim Davies’ prior employment as Engineering Manager at Ark Energy included technology assessment and configuration for utility-scale solar paired with long-duration storage — including a Richmond Valley programme at approximately 275 MW solar with an eight-hour, 2,200 MWh BESS approaching financial close. That experience informs how TDTEC structures reviews; it is not presented as a TDTEC-delivered case study or guaranteed outcome.
- Use-case and revenue stack alignment
- Sizing, duration and augmentation strategy
- Hybrid and co-location interfaces
- Safety and hazardous-area boundaries
Performance assumptions and degradation
Energy, power, efficiency, auxiliary load, availability and degradation assumptions drive both the financial model and the employer’s requirements. Independent review tests whether vendor claims, EPC guarantees and owner expectations use consistent definitions, test conditions and measurement boundaries.
Review may cover warranty structures, capacity testing logic, round-trip efficiency treatment, and how seasonal or cycling behaviour is reflected in pro forma production — without inventing performance statistics TDTEC has not verified on your project.
- Nameplate versus usable energy definitions
- Degradation curves and augmentation triggers
- Availability and exclusion clauses
- Performance test protocols and acceptance criteria
Grid and integration interfaces
Storage projects fail at interfaces: POI limits, fault levels, protection coordination, power quality, communication with AEMO or DNSP systems, and hybrid plant controls. TDTEC reviews integration concepts and study inputs against connection requirements and realistic operating modes.
Detailed power-system or electromagnetic transient studies may be delivered by specialist consultants. TDTEC can coordinate scope, review assumptions and interpret results owner-side — particularly where prior work has touched grid connection strategy and HV plant commissioning interfaces.
Procurement and contract risk
BESS procurement bundles cell supply, power conversion, balance of plant, EMS/SCADA, and often wrap guarantees. Advisory support helps owners compare technical schedules, identify split-responsibility gaps, and stress-test EPC and equipment contracts for integration and performance risk.
Prior employment experience included engineering input to EPC, equipment supply and construction arrangements on large storage programmes — useful when reviewing commercial technical clauses, but not a substitute for legal advice.
- Technical schedules and battery-limit diagrams
- Single versus multi-vendor responsibility
- Liquidated damages and performance security interfaces
- Spares, O&M and lifecycle data obligations
Independent design and delivery review
Targeted design assurance or owner-side review can cover layouts, fire and egress strategy interfaces, DC collection, HVAC and fire suppression concepts, protection settings philosophy, and commissioning sequences — aligned to the project stage and the decision at hand.
For acquisition or refinancing, BESS-specific diligence can be scoped with technical due diligence or renewable energy due diligence colleagues in a coordinated, non-duplicative way.
